Known Implementations
Open-source projects that implement the Reverse GitOps pattern — a Kubernetes API receives user intent, a controller writes it back to Git, a GitOps operator deploys from Git.
gitops-reverser
by ConfigButlerA Kubernetes operator that watches the Kubernetes API and turns live changes into versioned, sanitised YAML in Git. It strips runtime fields to produce stable, intent-only manifests, can group changes within a time window into a single commit, and gives you an audit trail in Git for every API-level change.
Supports audit-only, human-in-the-loop, and split-ownership modes, with Secret encryption via SOPS/age and SSH-signed commits. Where the control plane exposes audit webhooks — self-managed clusters such as k3s or Talos — commits are attributed to the real Kubernetes actor rather than a single configured identity.
